M Chapoutier Australia

In 1997, Michel Chapoutier set his sights on the terroirs of Australia, his goal being to connect with like-minded individuals who shared his passion for expressing the authentic character of the vine.

He discovered, in his words, a land rich in potential, simply waiting to be revealed. He bought land and collaborated with esteemed winemaking families, combining complementary expertise to produce exceptional wines. The outcome was refined Shiraz wines of remarkable elegance and mineral purity. In 2002, he partnered with Ron and Elva Laughton of Jasper Hill in central Victoria, specifically in Heathcote, a region known for its rare early Cambrian soils. He also collaborated with Rick Kinzbrunner at the Giaconda vineyard in Beechworth, northeastern Victoria, where granite soils dominate. Expanding further, Maison M. Chapoutier acquired two additional vineyards - Shays Flat and Landsborough - in the Victorian Pyrenees, where he established the fully owned Domaine Tournon. The winery is on the main street of the town of Heathcote.
