Muscat/Moscatel

Probably the most ‘grapey’ tasting grape in flavour, Moscatels of several varieties (Muscat de Frontignan possibly superior to Muscat d’Alexandria) are widely grown all around the Mediterranean to make sweet whites which can be naturally sweet, or fortified to preserve its sweetness. It goes intense and orangey when aged in barrel, making it a very good foil for chocolate. In northern Italy it makes a lovely grapey sparkling white, and dry Muscats from France (Alsace and Languedoc) are also worth trying.
