A mosaic of microclimates producing world-class wines from cool-climate classics to bold shiraz
From Coastal Elegance to Inland Richness
The state of Victoria, renowned for its distinct soils and astonishing diversity of microclimates, is home to some 21 wine regions. The warm days and cool nights make ideal growing conditions, the Yarra Valley for example is cooler than Bordeaux and a bit warmer than Burgundy – well suited to classic cool-climate grape varieties.
Regionality and a keen understanding of terroir is evident across Victoria, ranging from the fine expressions of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Mornington Peninsula (look out for the pioneering Paringa Estate wines) and the Yarra Valley (the wines of Yarra Yering are world-class) in the south, to sublime Shirazes (try Chapoutier’s Tournon Mathilda Shiraz) from the ancient Cambrian soils of Heathcote, to the fortified/sweet wines of Rutherglen in the north – with a plethora of other interesting plantings and wine styles in between.
Australia's unique climate and landscape have fostered a fiercely independent wine scene that well and truly holds its own on the international stage. Victoria is in the far south-east corner of Australia. It is the smallest, yet one of the most biodiverse mainland states in the country.

Paringa Estate
World-class, cool-climate wines from Mornington Peninsula pioneers, Paringa Estate.
In 1983, Lindsay McCall had what he calls a ‘wine epiphany’. After tasting a 1980 Seville Estate Shiraz, he was convinced Victoria could rival the world’s great wine regions. He purchased a north-facing, derelict apple orchard on Mornington Peninsula and set about planting four hectares of vines. For the first 10 years, Lindsay balanced life as a geography teacher with winemaking and the estate. Finally in 1996, he decided to fully devote himself fully to Paringa, investing in a purpose-built winery and restaurant. From these humble beginnings, Paringa has gone on to become one of Australia’s most celebrated wine estates. Lindsay is now joined by his son, Jamie, and together they manage around 10 ha of wines and produce world-class, cool-climate wines.
In 1997, Michel Chapoutier set his sights on the terroirs of Australia, his goal being to connect with like-minded individuals who shared his passion for expressing the authentic character of the vine.
He discovered, in his words, a land rich in potential, simply waiting to be revealed. He bought land and collaborated with esteemed winemaking families, combining complementary expertise to produce exceptional wines. The outcome was refined Shiraz wines of remarkable elegance and mineral purity. In 2002, he partnered with Ron and Elva Laughton of Jasper Hill in central Victoria, specifically in Heathcote, a region known for its rare early Cambrian soils. He also collaborated with Rick Kinzbrunner at the Giaconda vineyard in Beechworth, northeastern Victoria, where granite soils dominate. Expanding further, Maison M. Chapoutier acquired two additional vineyards - Shays Flat and Landsborough - in the Victorian Pyrenees, where he established the fully owned Domaine Tournon. The winery is on the main street of the town of Heathcote.
