Back in 1969 Dr Bailey Carrodus’s search for the perfect vineyard site led him to Yarra Valley and created Yarra Yering. His aim was to emulate the sophisticated, elegant wines he had encountered whilst studying at Oxford – blending European varietals with Australian character.
The winery is now considered amongst the highest in Australia, with some attributing iconic status to it. Dr Carrodus also succeeded in putting Yarra Valley on the map as a serious producer of cool-climate wines. Since 2013, the winemaking has been undertaken by Sarah Crowe, who was named as James Halliday’s 2017 Winemaker of the Year. They are, perhaps, best known for their flagship Bordeaux blend called simply Dry Red Wine No.1, alongside Dry Red No. 2, Rhône blend and exceptional single varietal wines. With remarkable cellaring potential, Yarra Yering produces some of Australia’s most sought-after and age-worthy wines.
