£49.00

75cl ALC 13.5%

Embodying the best characteristics of all the Lafon Mâconnais wines, Clos du Four has the silkiness. power and minerality of a good Côte de Beaune white, which it could be in all but name. Matured in oak puncheons, the amount of wood is just right for medium term ageing.

Héritiers du Comte Lafon

Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon is the baby brother of the exalted Domaine Comtes Lafon in Meursault, though with 26 ha of vines now, it is not quite so ‘baby’ anymore.

Lower prices and greater availability give Burgundy lovers the chance to experience some of the magic of the Lafon Meursaults. The wines are made from its own domaine-grown grapes at a winery in Milly-Lamartine, in the hills at the back of the Mâconnais. We visited it back in 1999 just after Dominique Lafon completed the purchase and were immediately struck by the bowl of vines behind the winery, grapes from these going into the Milly-Lamartine wine, with one mid-slope parcel bottled separately as Clos du Four. We have since travelled up-hill-and-down-dale with Dominique exploring the expanded estate from the cooler, more elevated Le Monsard vineyard in nearby Bussières to Uchizy, 18 miles away, where he bought 6 ha of vines in 2003. These include Les Maranches, on the scrubby hill visible from the autoroute, which has a proportion of the intriguing Chardonnay Musqué clone, and Clos de la Crochette in the neighbouring village of Chardonnay. There was further expansion in into Viré-Clessé, then Mâcon-Prissé, Saint-Véran and Pouilly-Fuissé from the 2015 vintage.

Vintage guide

A warm season but with cooler nights, 2022 looks to have brought both excellent quality and, importantly, a decent quantity. The 2021 vintage was heavily affected by frost meaning quantities are well down though the quality is very good. 2020 was historically early and regarded as a great vintage. 2019 is a worthy successor to the excellent ‘18s, where low yields have given very concentrated wines. A seriously good vintage here in 2018 as the region escaped the frosts which have plagued recent years. They have a good crop of rich, aromatic whites across the region as a result. Despite a familiar and now all-too-frequent late frost in 2017 the growers in the Côte d’Or were better prepared and the vintage has delivered excellent results, with many domaines back to ‘normal’ yields. In the Mâconnais and Chablis growers were not quite so lucky with yields down for the second year but wines of excellent quality. What there is in 2016 is very good but sadly frost and hail had a bigger than usual impact this year, particularly in Chablis and the Mâconnais, but almost no-one escaped unscathed. 2015 produced round, full whites with good, ripe fruit. 2014 started well enough with an early spring but a cooler than average summer, and hailstorms in the south, reduced yields. The resultant wines, however, have elegance and beautiful balance. A cold season in 2013 meant yields were low but good growers have produced some very drinkable wines.
