New Zealand Explorer - Mixed Half Dozen
This case highlights the main grape varieties that you’ll encounter in New Zealand, looking further afield than just the ubiquitous Sauvignon Blanc. That’s a good place to start however, with our own label benefiting from being just a bit more restrained than some others but still full of fruit. Chardonnay, for us, is a superstar in NZ; the cool climate brings freshness which balances the ripe, round fleshy character that this grape shows at its best, and while Kumeu is best known for its Chardonnays, this Pinot Gris has a lovely fresh line and good texture, it’s a cracking food wine. Our own-label Pinot Noir is a new discovery with a light, herby side that is elegant and refined, as is the character of Pask’s Merlot that comes from the famous Gimblett Gravels of Hawke’s Bay on North Island. Finally, we had to include Te Mata’s Syrah which is a great reflection of balanced Syrah that nods to the Rhône with its peppery style buts loads the sweet plummy fruit on top.
