"A joint venture between Nicolás Brun Aguerri of Batán de Salas and Tom and Emma Holt, ex Tanners, now owners of Paso-Primero. A blend of Syrah, Moristel, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, hand-picked and fermented and aged in a mix of open-top fermenters, barrels and concrete tanks. I just love, love, love the back labels of these Pasotismo wines, each with an infographic flowchart showing exactly how the wine is made. It's so creative, so clever and packed with detailed information delivered in a format even a non-wine-geek drinker would enjoy and learn from. Genius. The front labels are cool too. And the wine inside the bottle is worth all the effort that's gone into the label. Sticky black figs and mulberries on hot stones. Purple sage flowers and purple storm clouds. The mouth-watering sharpness of wild raspberries. Tannins that feel like glossy apple skin. Fruit with the frank, happy shout of laughter of a child on a slide. Deliciousness factor? 10. Quaffability factor? 10. But don't be convinced into thinking that because of that, this wine is simple. It delivers complexity and quality at every level."

Paso Primero was founded by Tom and Emma Holt, ex-employees of Tanners. Tom left Tanners to study winemaking at Plumpton College in 2010, graduating with highest honours. After spells working around the world, including New Zealand with Kate Radburnd at C J Pask, and Canada (near Niagara where Tom recalled the struggle with the sheer cold of winter killing too many vines), they settled on Somontano in northern Spain as the source for their first wine, Paso Primero Tinto with it's distinctive 'ladder label' and wren symbol.

Somontano means 'under the mountain' and at 750 metres the region produces grapes of very high quality (due to the high altitude and cool climate found in Somontano) which are selected from mature, family-owned vineyards around Barbastro. The wines are made in an ultra modern winery at Sommos where Tom is helped by the DeBeroz family, the leading lights of the Somontano appellation. Quality of fruit is vital and the wine is designed to be fresh and fruity with about 30% barrel-aged for six months. Tempranillo, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon all perform well, while the Holts love working with Gewurztraminer and Riesling. They have also branched out into vermouths - their Paso Vermú proving a huge and immediate hit in Shropshire and Spain.

Vintage guide

Always difficult to generalise about Spain but 2022 saw high temperatures and an early harvest of clean grapes, the early signs look good. The 2021 vintage is very good after a warm dry season with wines showing good concentration and aromatics. A wet first half of the 2020 vintage meant a lot of work in the vineyard was needed but a better, more consistent second half resulted in some juicy young wines with those ageing in barrel looking very promising. A very good year, 2019 had warm dry conditions but yields were limited by a tricky flowering period. A cooler and wetter year than other recent vintages has endowed the wines of 2018 with greater freshness and lower alcohols. Across the country the wines are showing good aromatics, plenty of weight, and a juicy fresh character. Growers had a complex year in 2017 having to contend with frost, hail and drought. Yields are down as a result, but the picture overall is of good quality particularly in Galicia and the South, Penedès also performed well. The 2016 vintage was pretty good on the whole with Ribera del Duero, Rioja and Rueda having excellent results. 2015 was heralded as the best vintage across Spain in recent years, and particularly so in the north. 2014 saw some good wines made with a little rain in the second half of harvest and low yields. This came after the potentially great 2013 vintage which has given fresh, vibrant, robust wines.
