Auchentoshan distillery

Founded in 1823 the Auchentoshan distillery lies in the Scottish Lowlands to the north-west of Glasgow, below the Kilpatrick Hills and sources their spring water for distillation from Loch Cochno in the hills above. It has changed ownership multiple times over the last two centuries and today is part of Suntory Global Spirits.

Auchentoshan makes unpeated malts, and unusually is unique in being the only Scottish distillery to triple distil its whiskies, taking the raw spirit from the usual 70% ABV up to 81% ABV after the third distillation. Long fermentation times of over 60 hours give generous apple and citrus character. They have three stills – the usual wash and spirit stills and sitting between them their ‘intermediate’ still’. The resulting unpeated lowland malt is even more delicate, smooth and sweet compared to the house styles of other lowland distilleries, with maturation in casks previously used for bourbon and sherry.
