Rémi Benon

Rémi Benon’s domaine is situated outside the village of Juliénas on the road to La Chapelle de Guinchay. He is the third generation to farm this 7.5 ha estate, but is the 10th generation of his family to be a viticulturist.

The estate is made up of 3ha of Chénas, 1.5ha of Saint-Amour, 1ha of Juliénas, with the balance Beaujolais -Villages. He took over the reins at the tender age of 16 following the untimely death of his father in 1982, with help from his uncle, Jean, now retired and from whom he took over sole ownership of the whole place in 2005 . He is not organic as he uses herbicides in the vineyards, which are densely planted and grassed through, though he is experimenting with replanting slightly further apart which will enable him to mechanise the weeding. He has a small neat winery opposite his house where gravity plays its part in the wine making which is Burgundian rather than the traditional carbonic maceration used in Beaujolais. Fermentation and ageing takes place in epoxy-lined concrete tanks.
