Tinta Roriz, a synonym for Tempranillo, is widely used in Port production and, more recently, in the excellent Douro Red table wines of the same region. Tempranillo - early-ripening and its name means ‘little early one’ - is synonymous with Spain but has a strong following in Portugal where it is also called Aragones. It has a warm, strawberry flavour which gets a lick of vanilla when it has been aged in oak (Reservas), and it ages very well too in the garrafeira style.
