Welschriesling
Confusingly this variety is not related to the famous Riesling of Germany. It is a grape variety widely planted across central and eastern Europe under many different names. In Slovenia and Serbia it is called laški rizling, and in Czech Republic and Slovakia it is known as Rizling Vlassky. Hungary, where it is called Olasz Riesling, has both dry and sweet examples. Only in Croatia does it come under a very different name, Graševina. Despite this grape being the source of Lutomer Laski Rizling in times gone by, Welschriesling can create high-quality wines. This is an aromatic grape variety that has naturally high acidity making it perfect for sweet wine production. See also Graševina.
