Maturana Tinto
This is an old established Riojan grape now making a bit of a comeback, particularly in the warm, southern exposures of the Rioja Oriental (previously Rioja Baja). It originated in Jura, France, where it is called Trousseau, and in quite a lot of pockets of Spain and Portugal it goes by Bastardo! For all that, Maturana is highly regarded and produces deep fruited, intense yet quite fresh reds that complement Tempranillo and work well with oak.
