A brilliantly inviting nose of cooked quince and apples with a hint of Manuka honey. The palate has more of the same but with citrus acidity and a mineral note. Fantastic.

Domaine de la Chauvinière

One of the most go-ahead estates in Muscadet with the dynamic Jérémie Huchet in charge.

Jérémie Huchet joined the family firm in 2001 and immediately set about converting Domaine de la Chauvinières to sustainable agriculture. One third of the estate has been certified organic since 2010. He has also overseen the estate’s growth to some 64 ha. The origins of the estate go back to medieval times when it was part of a monastery. The cellars and house which make up the domaine today were bought by Jérémie’s great- grandfather, Joseph Arnaud. It then passed to Jérémie’s grandfather, Constant Huchet, in 1945, who took over just 6 ha, then he in turn was joined by his son Yves in 1971 then Jérémie in 2001. The wines of Domaine de la Chauvinières are from stony granite soils about 30cm deep on a fractured granite sub-soil. These fissures in the rock allow the roots of the vine to penetrate the ground. The winemaking is traditional including some skin contact and ageing on lees. A portion of the wines are aged in wooden barrels and vats on fine lees without stirring to add complexity to the final wines. The top wines from this estate such as Granit are from a plot of 65 year old vines and the wine is aged for three years before bottling. Jérémie has recently built a new dedicated winery/warehouse and shop on the outskirts of the village. Jérémie is a keen ambassador for the Crus Communale wines of Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine. Domaine de la Chauvinières is in the Château-Thébaud cru but he also makes wines from Goulaine and Clisson.
