Sixtus, Valtellina Superiore, Franzina 2022 En Primeur - Case of 6

Sourced from the lower vines of the dramatically steep terraces of Buglio-in Monte, winemaker Mattia Franzina can be rightly proud that all his hard work has not gone to waste! A wonderfully attractive nose of cool, ripe raspberry, strawberry and spices lead onto a juicy, soft palate of more red fruits and wiff of oak. Very much a fruit driven Nebbiolo (or Chiavennasca as its non-locally), this is an excellent all-rounder and perfect for newcomers to this noble grape varietal. 3-9 years.

Cantine Franzina

The Valtellina is part of Lombardy and is a valley north east of Milan, lying close to the Swiss border, and is another outlier for Nebbiolo, here known as Chiavennasca. Vineyards are on south, south west and south east facing slopes above the River Adda.

It’s another area which has seen a great increase in the number of small, quality minded producers in recent years. Typical of these is Mattia Franzina who has a miniscule 0.8 hectares of vines in Buglio-in-Monte, mostly planted with 100 year old Chiavennasca but also including some other local varieties. Mattia is also a talented agronomist and advises many of the other growers in the Valtellina. The family has been there for over 50 years but only started concentrating on vines and building a new cantina in 2014. Winemaking is straightforward with fermentation in stainless steel and 20% aged in oak for the Valtellina and a year in large oak for the Superiore. These are real handcrafted wines.

About En Primeur

Lying Abroad/En Primeur/In Bond Wines

Wines offered ‘Lying Abroad’ or ‘En Primeur’ provide a good way to secure some of the most sought after wines at opening prices. In addition we ensure it is the cheapest way to buy favourite mid-priced wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Rhône, so please ask us for our offers or check our website for latest reports. Prices are clearly marked in our sales literature and are exclusive of duty, shipping, marine insurance and VAT. Shipment of claret and Port normally takes place around 30 months after the vintage, burgundy and Rhône usually more quickly. A second invoice for the duty, shipping, marine insurance and VAT on the value of the wine is charged at the time of shipment - view current duty rates. There are no further charges for deliveries to a UK mainland home or work address. Your Lying Abroad purchases are covered under The Bunch Code of Practice which can be sent on request or viewed here.
