Vin Santo del Chianti, Geografico 2014

£23.50

75cl ALC 16%

A beautiful amber colour with a prominent nose of apricot jam. The palate is rich and ripe with sweet velvety texture and flavours of dried fruits, apricots, figs, raisins. The finish has a lick of citrus to keep it fresh.

Agricoltori del Geografico

The Agricoltori del Geografico was formed in 1961 by 17 farmers seeking to improve the quality of their produce and its commercial potential. Today the group ‘Geografico’ comprises 170 members and 60 winemakers in the most prestigious areas of Tuscany, covering an area equivalent to 571 hectares, and is owned by Piccini who added it to their portfolio in 2019.

Most of Geografico’s land falls under the DOCG quality standard with the main production areas being: Chianti Classico, Chianti Colli Senesi and Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Chianti Classico is produced from 250 hectares in the south of the region, at an altitude of between 280 and 600m above sea level, and in the province of Siena, a total of 160 hectares of vines produce Chianti Colli Senesi. Geografico’s aim is to produce wines that respect the traditions of Tuscany’s various regions while paying close attention to technical innovations that might further benefit their wines. Their headquarters, situated between Castellina in Chianti and Poggibonsi, is a vast warehousing, bottling and winery complex with oceans of room for further expansion. Environmentally mindful, a vast solar array provides a lot of their electricity, while they use their own ground water for washing thousands of bottles every day and recycle carefully.

Vintage guide

Last year’s vintage, 2023, proved complicated, good in the north but in central and southern regions, more tricky resulting in one of the smallest vintages of recent years. A dry winter followed by a hot summer has certainly affected yields in 2022, but the quality looks excellent across the country. Small but perfectly formed seems to sum up the 2021 vintage here. Across most of the country the 2020 vintage is looking very good indeed with ripe fruit and lovely aromatics. A classic if not straight forward vintage 2019 has delivered some excellent wines but in smaller quantity. Overall, the results are very good in 2018, though a warm wet early summer led to disease pressures in many parts of the country. The Northeast, home to Prosecco amongst others did particularly well; so too did Tuscany and Piedmont but yields were a little down in some estates. 2017 saw a small crop of excellent wines; spring frosts and a later heatwave nicknamed ‘Lucifer’ reduced yields, but you’ll find good results on the whole with excellent results in Piedmont. Yields were down in 2016 but quality is high, Piedmont and Tuscany at least as good as 2015. 2015 is generally an excellent vintage across Italy, perhaps reds having the edge over whites.
