Petrus
Petrus was the first Pomerol to win gold medals at the Exposition Universelle in 1878 and 1889 in Paris and has been top of the tree ever since. It’s vines – almost exclusively Merlot – are planted on a ‘buttonhole’ of the Pomerol plateau’s famed blue clay soil, which retains water in hot years.
The Moueix négociant family of Libourne became majority owners in 1969. That same year, 5 ha of vines were added to the estate through a purchase from the neighbouring Château Gazin, increasing the total vineyard area of Petrus to 11.4 hectares. Following the death of Jean-Pierre Moueix in 2003, ownership passed to his son Jean-François Moueix. Olivier Berrouet joined the estate in 2008 and now manages both the vineyard and winemaking, succeeding his father, Jean-Claude Berrouet, who produced 45 vintages of Pétrus during his tenure. He works alongside Jean Moueix, son of Jean-François.
