Pask Winery

In 1960 Chris Pask emigrated from England to New Zealand and spent many of the next 25 years flying his crop spraying plane over Hawke’s Bay. In 1970 he planted his first vineyard in Korokipo Road in Hawke's Bay.

In 1981 he founded the Pask winery in the area of the Ngaruroro River after spotting the potential of the stony soil from the air, and the first vines were planted in what today is the famous Gimblett Gravels wine district. In a position sheltered from cooling sea breezes this sun-soaked valley is a touch warmer than any of New Zealand’s other vineyard regions. Pask’s first vintage was a 1985 Cabernet Sauvignon and it received much acclaim. In 1991 he employed Roseworthy graduate, Kate Radburnd as winemaker and their reputation grew from strength to strength. Changes at board level saw John Benton become majority shareholder and owner at Pask in July 2017, having been a director since 2001. Chris Pask still remains on the board as the founder of Pask Winery. Winemaking is today overseen by head winemaker Paul Smith and Benton Wine Group winemaker Jeff Clarke. There are 60 hectares of vines with sustainable methods used in both the vineyards and winery to ensure the very best quality.
